Christopher Garcia - Ceramist

Ceramic sculpture - Ceramic pottery - Mixed Media work

Christopher Garcia CéramisteIn the summer of 2005, I was an Artist in Residence and a Visiting Professor in Finland. When I learned I would be there for two months and was expected to mount a solo show, I decided that I wanted to do work that was reflective of where I would be living and working. After reading several guide books, visiting museums, and doing research on the internet, I came across an English translation of the Kalevala online. The first edition of the Kalevala was published in 1835. The text, which deals with the folklore and legends of Finland, was compiled and edited by Elias Lönnrot. The stories are poetic, powerful and very imaginative. I decided it would be interesting to illustrate the key events of the book in clay dioramas, a method similar to the Calavera scenes of Mexico. By doing this, I could present the stories and give my own interpretations as a traveler to their representation.

In the two years since my experiences in Finland, I have made different series of sculptures based on a wide selection of written works. I have now illustrated the Book of Mormon, Richard Brautigan’s In Watermelon Sugar, James Branch Cabell’s Jurgen, the haiku poetry of Mursulata Mohammed and many other works. I continue to find new sources for my art and have found a true bonding tie to my love of reading and artistic creation.
