Working from my studio near the south coast of England my aim is to create pictures, rather than patterns upon my products. Using carefully finished appliqué and freehand machine embroidery I carry out all every aspect of the process myself, from initial design stage through to the final smattering of beads or a touch of hand embroidery.
My inspiration comes from many sources, usually ideas collected from my diverse travels : a bird market in Vietnam, the elegant front of a Parisian chocolatier, a Milanese cobbler.
I try to incorporate embroidered drawings, rather than patterns on my products, using space and colour to create something balanced, yet unpredictable. The idea is to wear these pictures or throw art on sofas and chairs, rather than just having it displayed on walls. Her favourite new collection is so far based on the wrought iron railings and gates one might find surrounding a park in Paris or London.
I want to keep the uniqueness of the designs, but suggest that the cushions can be produced with embroideries that work directly with each other, sometimes creating stories across ones furniture.
I have introduced elements such as an aviary or a fountain in the distance…it’s all very mix and match really ! Cushions can transform a home and I think that these new ranges are more versatile for my customers than the one off pieces.
